Alphamites DW: Frequently asked Questions

What is the dosage rate?

Alphamites is delivered at a rate of 1:2000 into the drinking water. This works out to a dosage of about 0.1mL of Alphamites per hen, per day of use (assuming that the hens are drinking a standard 200mL approximately per day).

Have there been any studies done on the product?

The product has been in use for nearly 15 years in various European countries (France, Germany, Belgium, etc.) The manufacturer has gathered testimonials on the effects from a number of their large customers in France (some with 400,000 hens or more) which we can supply, and can be verified by the farms themselves.

Is there any withholding period when being used for layers or meat birds?

No, there isn’t a withholding period for this product, either for meat or eggs. Alphamites DW is both herbal and organic, and won’t leave a residue.

Does Alphamites effect the taste of the eggs?

No, not at all.

The type of metabolites from plant extracts in ALPHAMITES DW have no metabolic value for the bird; this means they are not going to enter the egg at all. Therefore, there cannot be any effects on the taste of eggs.

What is the process that enables Alphamites to suppress red mites. How does it work?

Each of the extracts used has it’s own method of making the blood either unpleasant, or even indigestible to the Red Mite. As the Mite are exposed to blood containing the metabolites in Alphamites; the combined effects of these extracts should either deter the Mite from feeding, or upset their digestive process if they do consume the blood.

Besides the red mite suppression have there been any other benefits noted in testing for poultry generally?

The whole development process for Alphamites DW was focused on aiding in the control of Red Mite, because it is such a costly and prevalent pest. The product hasn’t been monitored for other positive effects.

Will the company be making a 500ml size bottle to lower the initial outlay cost, for small holders with only a few chickens?

We don’t have this currently; but have negotiated an alternative (smaller) packaging; which will be available very soon.

How long does the product last for?

The best before date is 2 years from the date of manufacture.

Are there any other products that your company has that are relevant to poultry?

We have a number of other products on the way, many of which are also organic in nature. The main other product that we currently have of this type, is a very potent antioxidant product called NorGrape 80, which is very effective in aiding the control of Heat Stress; among a wide range of other highly beneficial effects; when included in poultry diets. We will be sourcing a product called Nor-Mite very soon, which is used as a repellent for arthropods and flies. We also stock a large range of Veterinary equipment and vaccination machines relevant to poultry.

I just finished the first four-day treatment. Should I expect to see less mites during a pen clean?

You may experience a period of hyperactivity in the Mites. This can occur when the Alphamites DW first reaches useful levels in the blood, and the Mites begin to feel the effects. They become hyperactive as they search for a new food source, as the hen’s blood becomes indigestible.

What is the life cycle of the Red Mite?

We can supply a useful document which covers all of the stages of Mite development. Contact us for more information.

What is the application regime for Alphamites DW?

An entire “treatment period” for Alphamites DW consists of 8 days of use. This is further broken down into a longer period of 4 consecutive days at the start. Then, after a break of 3 weeks, 2 more consecutive days. Then after another gap of 4 weeks, 2 more consecutive days. After this the manufacturer suggests a break of about 15 weeks before restarting the process again if necessary.
